- How do I make a crochet pattern from a picture?
- Upload the picture, choose a stitch system (tapestry for full colour, filet for silhouettes), pick how many stitches wide the finished piece should be, and pick a colour count. The generator reduces the image to that many yarn colours, snaps each one to a real buyable colorway, and returns a numbered chart plus written row-by-row instructions. The whole thing runs in your browser — the image is never uploaded to a server.
- Is this crochet pattern generator free?
- Yes, and specifically the parts other generators charge for: the written row-by-row instructions, the chart editor, the printable chart, and the row tracker. There is no account, no watermark, and no export paywall. The site earns disclosed affiliate commissions when someone buys yarn through a link; the tools are free either way.
- What makes a picture generate a good crochet pattern?
- Contrast and simplicity. A subject that reads clearly at thumbnail size will read clearly as a chart, because a chart is a thumbnail — an 80-stitch blanket has roughly the detail of an 80-pixel image. Silhouettes, bold graphics, pets against plain backgrounds, and lettering convert well. Group photos, fine text, and busy floral backgrounds do not.
- Does the generator produce written instructions, or just a chart?
- Both. Every generated chart comes with the written pattern in proper notation — row number, right or wrong side, and the colour runs in working order (for example "Row 12 (RS): 4 A, 11 B, 4 A"). Corner-to-corner patterns are written in C2C tile notation, and filet in sp/bl notation.
- Can I edit what the generator produces?
- Yes. Every chart opens in the editor, where you can repaint individual stitches, swap a colour for a different yarn, or clean up an edge the algorithm got wrong. The written instructions, the materials list, and the yardage estimates all rebuild from your edits.
- How many colours should I generate with?
- Eight is the default and the right answer for most photographs. Every extra colour is another skein to buy and another set of ends to weave in, and past about sixteen the improvement is hard to see in yarn. Measured across our test set, going from 8 to 16 colours cuts colour error by roughly a third; going from 16 to 24 buys much less.
